Spring River Stone Co.

“This quarry, which is located three-fourths of a mile northeast of Carthage, is owned by E. W. Johns, G. W. Stebbins and H. C. Johns, who operated under the firm name of The Spring River Stone Co.  The company owns eleven acres of land on which the quarry is located.  The quarry has a face of 300 feet along the south side of the escarpment.  The east end of the opening has not been channeled.  The quarry was opened in 1900.

The stone from this quarry does not differ essentially from that quarried by the Carthage Building Stone Co.  The stone is mainly free from tar seams.

The quarry is equipped with a modern mill and necessary machinery, including channelers, gang saws, hoists, derrick, engine and boiler. The quarry is connected with the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad by a side track.”
